American Smoothies generate the same results as the Italian Leatherbacks and their genetics are interchangeable as far as breeding is concerned. This suggests that the same gene(s) being affected have coincidentally been produced in two different parts of the world. A dragon that displays this trait is a heterozygous carrier of the trait. A silkback (absence or complete reduction of scales) from this cross is a homozygous carrier. Please review the Italian Leatherback genetics page for additional information. This trait is actually a visual het for the silkback trait. It was originally thought to be a co-dominant genetic, but is a simple recessive trait, that prouduces visual hets, which are the leatherbacks. As previously stated, this gene also works with the Italian Leatherbacks to produce the silkback. Unfortunately, the animals were produced in quantity without knowing the altering gene(s) presence. The animals were not produced for smoothness as the Italian leatherbacks have been from the start, so they do not show as significant reduction in scaling and tubercles. This is until recently as breeders have been working with the American lines that now show significant scale reduction as their predecessors. So far the results seem to be successful and it wont be long until they are just as smooth as the Italian leathers, although there does appear to be some differences in the scaling of the American Co-dom and the Italian Leatherbacks.
